We are fortunate, living as we do in Ontario, to enjoy the public holiday named Family Day. The name alone reminds you to use the day as it was intended, by spending it with those closest to you. Today we did regular chores, played, worked on house projects and did all the regular stuff we do. But we also took time to enjoy this holiday and to celebrate a big accomplishment of the boys this winter, learning to ice skate.
The boy who only learned to skate 1 year ago spent his time whizzing around on one leg doing turns and skating as fast as he could. His little brother who only learned to skate alone this fall, chased up and down the rink with his Daddy and brother hot on his heels, laughing his head off the whole time.
The weather was cold enough for good ice but not face burning cold as it has been for most of the last 3 months. The sun beat down out of a fierce blue sky, almost insisting that everyone relish the moment. It’s easy to have fun on a day like this, to forget cares and chores and laugh at the boys racing back and forth on the ice.
We headed home to watch Return of the Jedi together (the death of Darth Vader did not go down well) enjoying some well earned sofa time. As I sit here an impatient almost nine years boy is reading over my shoulder, wriggling in anticipation of the latest instalment of Harry Potter, while I hear Stephen’s voice from upstairs, reading to Neirin as he giggles. This is my family, this was our day together. Simple, ordinary, wonderful.
I had no idea that there was a Family Day. That is so neat! Looks like you spent it as you should :).
